PORT OF POHANG

1) INTRODUCTION

The port of Pohang is located on the southeastern part of the Korean peninsula and has been developed as a major industrial port since the Pohang Iron and Steel Company's (POSCO) steel works.




2) APPROACH AND ENTRANCE

Pohang is an open roadstead with no approach channels and no hazard. The entrance of Pohang port(Youngil Bay) is about 6.5km wide and 13.5m to 19.8m deep. Lighted on head of south breakwater and on head of north breakwater.




3) TIDES AND WEATHER

Northeasterly wind prevails all the year round except for a while in summer.The tidal difference is less than about 30cm.




4) PILOTAGE

Pilotage is compulsory and pilots are available day and night. They usually go on board at quarantine anchorage but for big ships there are two positions where pilots usually go on board.

  • Outer Position: 36¡Æ06¡Ç00¡ÈN 129¡Æ30¡Ç00¡ÈE for ships over 100,000DWT.
  • Inner Position: 36¡Æ04¡Ç00¡ÈN 129¡Æ28.5¡Ç00¡ÈE for ships over 100,000DWT.

At night vessels only less than 20,000 in G/T and 200m in length can be taken alongside or away from all the berths except berth No.76 and 86.




5) QUARANTINE

Anchorage 36¡Æ04¡Ç40¡ÈN 129¡Æ28¡Ç30¡ÈE(semi-dai 600m). Quarantine officers go aboard the ship at the anchorage. Radio Pratique Message is acceptable if a valid Korean sanitary certificate is on board.





6) COMMUNICATIONS

At least two hours before arrival at Pohang, the master should contact with Pohang Port Control through VHF Ch.16 for information. At anchorage, it is possible to contact with parties ashore through VHF(Pohang Radio). When a ship is alongside a berth, customarily a port telephone is installed on board at ship's account for easy operation of loading of discharge.




7) ANCHORAGE

There are eighteen anchorages in inner harbour which have good holding grounds and berths.

The anchorages are used for waiting only without cargo operation. The anchorages are also assigned to each ship at berth meeting and the Pohang Port Control will notice each ship of the assigned berth to master or pilot.




8) BERTHS FACILITIES

  1. Pier 1 : 5 Berths for discharging POSCO's ore or coal.
  2. Pier 2 : 5 Berths for discharging POSCO's ore or coal. All above berths discharging by 11 unloaders and through belt conveyors to the open stock yard but berth no. 12 is for smaller ships for loading of CTS cargo and coastal bulk cargo.
  3. Pier 3 : 3 Berths for loading POSCO's export steel goods.
  4. Pier 4 : 2 Berths for loading POSCO's export steel goods.
  5. Pier 5 : 4 Berths for loading POSCO's export steel goods. Berth no. 53 has been constructed for the purpose of all-weather operation for the specially built ships plying between Korea and Japan.
  6. Pier 6 : 4 Berths for small-sized vessels carrying General cargoes Berth no. 61 is generally used for tugboat station It is impossible to be alongside at berth no. 62 on night time.
  7. Dong-Hang (Pier 7 - 7 berths and Pier 8 - 6 berths) : these Piers are usually for discharging or loading of various shippers' or consignees' goods. There are five shore cranes in berth nos. 81 and 82 for discharging Scrap and HBI.




9) BUNKERING

There are three local bunkering service companies in this port but some of them absolutely do not operate bunkering at anchorage, because heavy sea sometimes hinders bunkering schedule if they have to take bunkers from Pusan or Ulsan.




10) SHORE CRANE

16 units of 50-150 tons of crane are available through local crane operators.
